Lufthansa flies relief supplies for Philippine typhoon victims
A Lufthansa A340-600 aircraft left Frankfurt yesterday carrying 25 tonnes of relief supplies to the Philippine capital, Manila, bound for areas of the South-east Asia island country devastated by Typhoon Haiyan on Friday.
In a relief operation organised in less than 36 hours, the aircraft was loaded with 5,400 fleece blankets, 3,000 plastic tarpaulins and tents as well as emergency medical supplies to speed first aid to victims of the natural disaster.
The aid effort in the Philippines is concentrated on the eastern province of Leyte and its capital Tacloban, where 10,000 inhabitants are feared to have perished.
Relief workers have yet to reach some towns and villages cut off since the typhoon hit.
