In its effort to prevent water borne diseases across the 20 local government areas of Ogun State, a total of 2,500 ceramic water filter pots have been set aside for distribution in rural communities in the state.
The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Rural Development, Mrs Olayinka Kukoyi, stated this while receiving the delivery of the pots in Abeokuta, last week.
Kukoyi explained that the pots upon distribution would be used to filter water sourced from the streams and rivers thereby make it safe for drinking.
She noted that a survey conducted revealed pathogens presence in water consumed in some local communities, which she said was as high as 99.8 per cent.

This development, according to her, makes water-borne diseases such as typhoid, dysentery, cholera and diarrhoea rampant in such communities.
She said: “The distribution of these pots will go a long way in reducing 99.8 percent of water borne diseases that was responsible for typhoid, dysentery, cholera and diarrhoea in the state.  The ministry’s vision is to focus on the prevalence of these conditions in the rural areas.”
She added that the pots would be distributed only to communities where streams and rivers are their sources of water, saying that the provision of solar-powered boreholes in 10 rural communities was also part of the effort to prevent diseases.
While assuring that the ministry would be unrelenting in the drive to make living more convenient for rural dwellers, she affirmed that more solar-powered and motorised boreholes would be provided in 2014.
Kukoyi also enjoined the beneficiaries to take adequate care of the ceramic pots so as to serve them for a long time.
