Ebola Victim arrives Lagos from Sierra Leone; People Scamper

There was serious panic at Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos on Wednesday as a Nigerian, who had contacted Ebola Virus Disease in Sierra Leone arrived aboard Royal Air Maroc.

The ebola victim, Theophilus Onnakhinon, was flown from Sierra Leone by the airline while his younger brother, Chinedu Eroka, was said to have absconded from the Sierra Leonean authorities. It was not however clear why Eroka absconded.

U.S. seeks to use Spanish military bases in anti-Ebola operation


The United States has asked the Madrid government for permission to use the U.S. military bases in Spain in its operation to combat the Ebola crisis in Africa, a Defence Ministry source said on Thursday.
"The U.S. authorities have indeed asked Spain to use their bases in the country as a transit point for logistics and engineers building up field hospitals in Liberia and Sierra Leone," the source told Reuters.
Madrid was set to agree to the request to use the bases at Rota near Cadiz and at Moron de la Frontera near Seville in southern Spain.

US may start screening air passengers for Ebola

Looks like the US is considering screening passengers from Ebola hit countries before they enter the country. This is coming about a week after a Liberian man entered the country with Ebola. President Obama said yesterday that though the likelihood of an Ebola outbreak in the US is "extremely low' but they have to react.

Governor Fashola hosts some Ebola survivors

Lagos state Governor, Babatunde Fashola, today September 18th, hosted some Ebola survivors at his office at the state Secretariat in Alausa, Ikeja. Speaking with the survivors, the governor commended them for coming forward to share their experiences, saying that they are proof that the disease is not a death sentence.

The survivors in attendance included the widow of late Port Harcourt doctor, Dr Emenuo Kelechi (left), Dr Ibeawuchi Morris (second left), Dr Fadipe Akinniyi (centre), Mr. Dennis Akagha (late Nurse Justina Ejelonu's fiance) and Dr Adaora Igonoh. See more photos after the cut...

Teachers to Go on Strike over New Schools’ Resumption Date

The Nigerian Union of Teachers has threatened to go on strike if the Federal Government fails to put in place measures to protect its members and pupils from contracting the deadly Ebola Virus Disease before the resumption of schools all over the country.

The NUT National President, Michael Alogba, in a telephone interview with Punch on Wednesday, stated that the union would not allow any of its members to teach until it was scientifically and medically proven that the country was out of the Ebola scourge.

Ebola Kills Another Medical Doctor In Port Harcourt


While Nigerians are still sad over the death of Stella Adadevoh, another doctor, who secretly treated a diplomat who had contact with the Liberian-American Patrick Sawyer, has died of Ebola in Nigeria.

The doctor, who has yet to be named, died on Friday. His wife has taken ill and has been quarantined in Port Harcourt. Interestingly, the diplomat the doctor treated is still alive.

The Japanese government has offered to release an anti-influenza drug called Favipiravir, which they claim they developed for the treatment of new and re-emerging viral diseases, including Ebola. They say the drug can treat Ebola and other influenza viral diseases. Continue...

American Doctor With Ebola Will Be Released From Hospital

 
An American doctor who contracted Ebola will be released today from Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, ABC News has learned.
Dr. Kent Brantly, 33, contracted the deadly virus while working in a Liberian Ebola ward with the aid agency Samaritan’s Purse. He was evacuated to the U.S. earlier this month along with coworker Nancy Writebol.

Brantly is the first-ever Ebola patient to be treated in the U.S. and the first human to receive the experimental serum known as ZMapp.

Lagos doctor confirmed to have Ebola as nurse who escaped from quarantine is returned back to Lagos

A doctor who attended to late Patrick Sawyer at the First Consultant Hospital has been confirmed positive with the Ebola virus. Speaking at a news conference today, the Nigerian Minister of Health, Professor Onyebuchi Chukwu said the doctor is currently undergoing treatment at the quarantine centre in Lagos.
Prof Onyebuchi revealed  that some of the 169 secondary contacts of Sawyer were no longer under surveillance and had been released, having completed the 21 days of incubation period.

FG not serious about fighting Ebola –Doctors, nurses

The Lagos State chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association and the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives have accused the Federal Government of not being proactive enough in the fight against the Ebola Virus Disease.
The doctors and nurses said at separate news conferences in Lagos on Sunday, that the government had yet to put in place adequate measures to protect health workers willing to manage those infected by the deadly virus.
