Kelechi Iheanacho scored four times as Nigeria blew out
defending champions Mexico 6-1 in their opening game of the Fifa
Under-17 World Cup.
Isaac Success, who provided three of the Iheanacho's assists, and defender Chidiebere Nwakali got the other two.
Nigeria were forced to weather an early storm from the Mexicans, who should have gone in front after just three minutes. Striker Ulises Jaimes rose unmarked between the Nigeria centre backs, but could only direct his header wide.
As the Golden Eaglets gradually established a foothold in the game, they began to get the champions worried.
It did not take long before they made it count. Isaac Success broke away with pace on the counter, shook off his marker, and hit at goal.
His shot was saved, but the ball fell back fortuitously to him, and he laid it on a plate for the arriving Kelechi. Iheanacho to finish high into the net over a pair of Mexican defenders.
Seven minutes later, he was back. Again, Success was the provider. And again, it was on another breakaway. This time, the Nigeria No 10 showed calm composure to skip his way into space and find the net.
But Mexico found a riposte a minute late. Nwakali and co failed to clear their lines at the back, and Jaimes showed an. Iheanacho-style composure to pass the ball beyond Alampasu
But that was as good as it got for El Tri. Iheanacho grabbed his hattrick from a long throw in, Nwakali added another from 25-yards out not long after, and Success got the goal his enterprise deserved when he skipped past two to slot home.
But the final word belonged to Iheanacho, who cut in from the right and fired in a venomous ball from range.
Mexico were left dazed, as the irresistible Nigerians prepare for a date against Sweden next.
