About 200 policemen yesterday blocked the main entrance of the University of Calabar, preventing members and officials of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) Calabar branch from embarking on a planned street rally.
Speaking at the entrance of the university, Chairman of ASUU in the university, Dr. James Okpileya, said they wanted to move round in a peaceful manner and enlighten members of the public on the need for the university system to be saved.
He said they wrote a letter to the police informing them about the rally and public enlightenment, and that he was surprised by their attitude.
"Why would market women and students be allowed to carry out demonstrations while ASUU's peaceful rally is disrupted?," he asked.
He charged members of the union to remain steadfast in the struggle.
Also speaking, former national president of ASUU, Comrade Festus Iyayi, criticized the Federal Government for employing "savage strategy of no work, no pay to starve the lecturers".
He maintained that lecturers would not be intimidated by what he called "a theory of cascading mediocrity."
Chairman of the union at the Cross River University of Technology (CRUTECH) Dr. Nsim Ogar urged the police to exercise caution in the discharge of their duties.
