Niger State Governor, Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu, has attributed religious misunderstanding among Moslems to extremism resulting in only about 50 per cent well knowledgeable in Islamic religion.
With promotion and encouragement of the girl-child education, Aliyu said it will be possible for more percentage of Moslems to be educated in both Islamic and western education thereby becoming well versed in both
.
Aliyu spoke when the Emir of Minna, Umaru Farouk Bahago, paid him Sallah homage/mini durbar on Wednesday, saying, ‘about 50 per cent of practicing Muslims in Nigeria are ignorant of the tenant and teachings of islam’.
Aliyu, who spoke in Hausa said education has become imperative because it has been discovered that lack of adequate religious knowledge, is contributing to some of the misrepresentation of Islam.
“Acquiring education has become a necessity for all especially western and Islamic education because out of the 100 per cent Muslims, 50 per cent are ignorant of the true teachings of Islam and that is why you find that only very few of them (Muslims) understands the religion”.
Aliyu challenged his compatriots in the 19 northern states to encourage the girl-child education because it is the safest way of impacting education; Islamic and western education because, “if a girl is educated her wards will be educated”.
“Girl-child are the ones who train up children, if a girl is educated both in western and Islamic ways then her children are likely to be educated”, Aliyu, who is the chairman of the Northern State Governors’ Forum (NSGF) said.
The governor urged the people of Niger State to take advantage of the vast land mass in the state to engage in aggressive agricultural activities that will empower the government and people of the state, especially now that plans are underway for the convocation of a national conference.
