As the Golden Eaglets raced into the final of the ongoing FIFA Under-17 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates with a 3-0 defeat of Sweden, President Goodluck Jonathan has congratulated the Eaglets for the
feat.
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, Jonathan said he joined other very proud and happy Nigerians within and outside the country in applauding the Eaglets’ enthralling 3-0 victory over their Swedish opponents in the semi-final match played yesterday evening.
"As the Eaglets prepare for the final match against the Mexican team, President Jonathan urges them not to be over-confident or take victory for granted, but to stay focused, train well and deploy their full arsenal of strength, determination and artistry once again to ensure that they overcome the Mexicans once again and return home with the Under-17 World Cup."
The President assured the Eaglets and their handlers of the continued prayers, best wishes and fullest support of the federal government and all Nigerians as they strive to achieve ultimate victory in the competition.
He said he was looking forward to receiving them at the Presidential Villa when they triumphantly return to Nigeria.
Senate President, Senator David Mark also yesterday expressed appreciation to the victorious Golden Eaglets for doing the nation proud.
Mark in a congratulatory message to the players and officials in Dubai said the Nigerian lads gave a good account of themselves and made the nation the beautiful bride of the competition.
Speaking through his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Paul Mumeh, Senator Mark reminded the Golden Eaglets that the nation is solidly behind them in prayers and assured them that the government will do the needful in terms of their welfare and upkeep.
He added that the National Assembly on its part will continue to make adequate budgetary allocation for sports to flourish in Nigeria.
The Senate President noted that sports need to be encouraged as the needed ingredient for unity and cohesion in the country.
" We have every reason to encourage sports in all ramifications. More than anything else, sports unites all Nigerians. It is during sporting activities like this that we forget our differences and see ourselves as true brothers and sisters ", Senator Mark maintained.
He charged the Golden Eaglets and their officials to go all out to win the championship.
