Customs operatives attached to Seme Area
Command, on Tuesday impounded about 36.9 kilograms of substance
suspected to be Indian hemp.
Though, the suspects fled abandoning the
substance, the Public Relations Officer, Seme Area Command, Deputy
Superintendent of Customs Ernest Olottah, in a statement said the
suspects attempted to smuggle in the banned substance into the country
through the border.
He said the seized items were carefully concealed in six bags of rice.
“The three bags of 36.9 kilograms of Indian hemp were seized at Customs Tarmac check point, Seme border,” he said.
Olotta said the command also recorded seizures of cartons of frozen poultry products.
He added that the command has vowed to enforce the Comptroller General of Customs zero tolerance for smuggling, warning that anyone caught would be made to face the law.
“We will pursue with renewed vigour, Federal Government’s directive on the ban on all prohibited items, ranging from poultry products, textile, groundnut oil etc. Those involved in smuggling are economic saboteurs and shall be treated as such,” he said.
