South African set to be first black 'Afronaut' Will be on hour-long sub-orbital trip on Lynx Mark II


No one in Mandla Maseko's family has ever stepped outside South Africa, but the young township DJ is set to rocket into space next year.

From the dusty district of Mabopane, near Pretoria, 25-year-old Maseko has landed a coveted seat to fly 103-kilometres (64 miles) into space in 2015, after winning a competition organised by a US-based space academy.

He beat off a million other entrants from 75 countries to be selected as one of 23 people who will travel on an hour-long sub-orbital trip on the Lynx Mark II spaceship.

Lawyers fight over right to represent Jonathan in court


TWO law firms yesterday fought over rights to represent President  Goodluck Jonathan at a Federal High Court in Kaduna in a case filed against the president over the 2015 presidential election.
Two members of the PDP, Richard Mneaga, and Shuaibu Lilli had sued Jonathan saying he was not qualified to contest the election on the platform of the party.

Gay-Marriage Law: Canada cancels Jonathan’s visit

The furore arising from President Goodluck Jonathan’s assent to the bill prohibiting homosexual marriage reverberated on the diplomatic circles, yesterday, as it emerged that Canada has cancelled a scheduled state visit to that country by President Jonathan.

The cancellation was described as a reaction to President Jonathan’s decision to give assent to the Same Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Bill 2013 which penalizes homosexual partnerships in the country.

Online news portal, Saharareporters.com had first published the story on its site weekend.

The cancellation nonetheless, Special Adviser to the President on Political Affairs, Alhaji Ahmed Gulak upheld the president’s action, saying that there was no way homosexual marriages will accelerate the nation’s socio-economic progress.
