Gay-Marriage Law: Canada cancels Jonathan’s visit

The furore arising from President Goodluck Jonathan’s assent to the bill prohibiting homosexual marriage reverberated on the diplomatic circles, yesterday, as it emerged that Canada has cancelled a scheduled state visit to that country by President Jonathan.

The cancellation was described as a reaction to President Jonathan’s decision to give assent to the Same Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Bill 2013 which penalizes homosexual partnerships in the country.

Online news portal, Saharareporters.com had first published the story on its site weekend.

The cancellation nonetheless, Special Adviser to the President on Political Affairs, Alhaji Ahmed Gulak upheld the president’s action, saying that there was no way homosexual marriages will accelerate the nation’s socio-economic progress.

Okonjo-Iweala to Reps: ‘FG mobilizes N239.4bn to upgrade transmission in 2014’

The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has said the federal government mobilized about N239.445 billion ($1.5 billion) from multilateral sources to upgrade the transmission network this year and beyond.
Okonjo-Iweala disclosed this in her 102-page documented response to the 50 questions posed by the House of Representatives Committee on Finance. The document, according to the ministry, provides in extensive detail, including tables and graphs, answers to the committee’s questions.
A statement issued by the Special Adviser to the Minister, Paul Nwabuikwu, highlighted government’s major achievements in power as at 2013 and the completion of a comprehensive power sector privatization.

Nearly £6,000 of Viagra has been stolen from military reserves since 2007, according to Government figures.
The anti-impotence pills are among £7m of stolen stock, which also includes 100 bayonets, thousands of rounds of ammunition, televisions, a karaoke rig and an industrial washing machine.
The MoD was quick to point out that Viagra was also used for conditions such as low blood pressure and altitude sickness.
Also among the thefts is equipment from nuclear submarines, £7,000 of silver cutlery from Redford Cavalry and Infantry Barracks near Edinburgh and a £25,000 silver statue from the Household Cavalry barracks in Knightsbridge.

A nun who has given birth to a baby boy in Italy said she had no idea she was pregnant.
The 31-year-old was taken to hospital on Wednesday with abdominal pains, which she thought were stomach cramps, local media reported.

A Mississippi man accused of sending poisoned letters to President Barack Obama and two other public officials, and pinning them on an Elvis impersonator, pleaded guilty in U.S. court and agreed to a 25-year jail sentence, the Justice Department announced on Friday.
James Everett Dutschke, 41, has been jailed since his arrest last April, when authorities accused him of sending ricin-tainted letters to Obama, U.S. Senator Roger Wicker of Mississippi and a local Lee County judge, Sadie Holland.
