'My Husband Treats Me Like a Maid'

A house-wife, Rukayat Mohammed, Monday, urged an Ilorin Area Court to dissolve her three-year-old marriage to Gani because the husband treated her like a housemaid.
Rukayat, 29, of Sango Area, Ilorin, told the court that Gani did not respect and honour her as a wife.
She told the court that her husband was fond of maltreating her and did not accord her any marital status.
Gani objected to the prayer of his wife, saying he was still interested in the marriage.
The presiding judge, Mr. Yusuf Abdulkareem, adjourned the case till November 5 for a report of settlement.

Lebanese Men Accused of 'Terrorism' in Nigeria Trial Concludes

Nigeria's trial of three Lebanese-born men who are accused of terrorist-related activities associated with Hezbollah concluded Monday. Defense lawyers argued that some of the charges against the men had not been proven, and others were not criminal acts in the first place.
The mood in this hot courtroom was surprisingly relaxed given the seriousness of the charges and the judge told court officers to bring in chairs to make the accused men more comfortable.
The accused - Mustapha Fawaz, Abdullah Tahini and Talal Roda - are Nigeria residents with both Lebanese and Nigerian citizenship. A representative from the Lebanese embassy watched the proceedings from near the back of the courtroom.

FG, states harmonise taxes, levies

Federal, state and local governments are working on a document that will contain the lists of taxes and levies applicable in the economy for the three tiers of government.
A meeting was held yesterday in Abuja with the representatives of the federal and state governments to finalise the process.
Almost all the stakeholders at the meeting agreed that the issue of multiple taxation is a menace that should be curtailed.
Speaking at the meeting, Coordinating Minister of the Economy and Finance Minister, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala said despite several attempts by the government to tackle the issue of multiple taxation, it has remained unabated - affecting both big and small businesses and the movement of goods and services in the country.

ASUU: It’s now or never!

No one should dispute that the executive of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) comprises the largest collection of intellectuals in leadership positions. If, as supporters of President Jonathan claim, the possession of a PhD means the holder is incapable of making unintelligent decisions then they must accept that ASUU leadership contains far more PhD holders than the Federal Executive Council.
Given that academics unlike politics is a long term career it would be logical to assume ASUU's decisions are based upon long term interests. It would also be reasonable to conclude that their decisions would be more intelligent than those by governments of the day. It's hardly surprising the union hasn't called of its strike in response to appeals for sympathy.  Having spent so much time outside academics perhaps President Jonathan has forgotten such appeals are the most elementary form of fallacy of emotional appeal  which have no place in logical arguments.
