China says ‘clock is ticking’ on US debt ceiling
A senior Chinese official voiced concern over a looming deadline for raising the US debt ceiling Monday, saying the “clock is ticking” to avoid a default that could seriously harm China’s economic interests. “As the world’s largest economy and the issuer of the major reserve currency in the world, it is important for the US to maintain the creditworthiness of its Treasury bonds,” vice finance minister Zhu Guangyao told reporters. “It is important for the US economy as well as the global economy.” Zhu spoke with the United States government in a partial shutdown since the beginning of this month, due to a dispute between Republicans and Democrats over funding President Barack Obama’s signature health care programme that has prevented the passage of key spending legislation. An even more serious problem is the prospect that the US government will not have enough cash to pay its bills if an agreement to raise its debt ceiling is not
Woman caught planting bomb near Iraq school
A guard caught a woman planting a bomb next to a primary school in Iraq on Monday, while two blasts killed four Sahwa anti-Al Qaeda fighters, officials said. The woman was trying to plant a bomb next to the wall of a school in Madain, south of Baghdad, but was discovered by one of the school’s guards, who turned her over to the army with the help of a second guard, an interior ministry official said. The attempted bombing came a day after suicide bombers attacked a primary school and a nearby police station in northern Iraq, killing 18 people, including 10 children. A total of 36 people were killed in attacks across Iraq on Sunday. North of the capital, two roadside bombs killed four Sahwa anti-Al Qaeda fighters and wounded five on Monday. The Sahwa, who joined forces with the United States from late 2006 and helped bring about a sharp reduction in violence in Iraq, are frequently targeted by Sunni militants, who consider them to be traitors. The latest violence takes this month’s death toll to more than 170, and more than 4,850 since the beginning of the year, according to AFP figures based on security and medical sources.

Possible Engine Failure Brings Down Plane
A
chartered airplane nosedived into the ground and burst into flames near
tanks of aviation fuel on the outskirts of Lagos, Nigeria, on Thursday,
killing up to 16 people, officials said.
Six survivors were rushed to the hospital, two in critical condition, Joe Obi, spokesman for Nigeria's Aviation Ministry, told The Associated Press.
Obi said 14 people were killed on the aircraft that was carrying 20 people — 13 passengers and seven crew members.
However Lagos state Deputy Gov. Victoria Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire told reporters that 13 people died and there were seven survivors.
Later, Capt. Usman Muktar, commissioner of the Accident Investigation and Prevention Bureau investigating the accident, said there were only four survivors.

Why AEG Live Won the Michael Jackson Lawsuit
Brian Panish, attorney for the Michael Jackson family, delivers his closing argument in Los Angeles, California.
Michael Jackson's final concert promoter, AEG Live,
won't have to pay as much as $1.5 billion to the late superstar's mother
and children, a Los Angeles jury ruled Wednesday.
The jury found the promoter not liable in the wrongful-death case after
a trial that lasted more than five months and made public many
disturbing facts about Jackson – from his alleged desperation to obtain
powerful sleep medication to AEG's chief executive officer slapping the
"despondent" star on his rear-end to psych him up.
