Chandre Oraon has a section of hair on the small of his back that he has allowed to grow out, which now looks like a tail.
But rather than shock locals, the strange hair style and his skill at climbing has led to them to hail the 35-year-old as a human form of Hindu god Hanuman.
‘I am Hanuman. People have a lot of respect for me because of my tail. I don’t mind the tail at all. It is a gift by god,’ Mr Oraon said.
People turn up to his home in Alipurduar, West Bengal, unannounced so they can touch his tail for good luck.
Monika Lakda, who made the pilgrimage to see Mr Oraon, said: ‘My brother’s son was once very unwell and had fever.
‘We gave him medicine but it did not work. So we came to Chandre to seek his blessings. The baby recovered soon after that.’
Doctors believe the hairy tail is a symptom of spina bifida.
