The passenger jet - believed to be an Air Portugal flight - struggled to land at Manchester Airport
Forecasters say the treacherous conditions have not yet passed and are still urging motorists in particular to take care during tonight's rush hour.
Hurricane Gonzalo last week caused widespread damage and a power blackout when it hit Bermuda, and is expected to bring high winds and rain to the UK today.
In a fresh weather warning issued this morning, the Met Office said there was still the threat of trees being downed and debris being blown into the road.
It said: “There remains the potential for disruption to travel, especially as heavy showers run through, increasing the gust strength.
“Fallen leaves impeding drainage increases the risk of surface water affecting roads, while some damage to trees is possible, given that many are still in full leaf.”
Elsewhere, two people died and three were injured as the Hurricane Gonzalo storm battered the UK.
