Jailed broadcaster Stuart Hall threw his wedding ring into a prison pond in a fit of rage after a telephone row with his wife.
When he had calmed down, the shamed 83-year-old former It’s a Knockout presenter asked the Governor if he could pay to have the water dredged to retrieve it - but the request was turned down.
The revelations have been made by a former inmate of I wing at Wymott prison near Preston where Hall is serving a five-year sentence for a string of sex attacks on young girls.
The inmate who witnessed the pond drama told the Manchester Evening News: “He had an argument with his wife on the phone. He took the ring off and threw it in the pond in a paddy.
“Everyone else thought it was hilarious but he was furious. He was slagging her off."
Hall’s 75-year-old wife Hazel still lives in the couple's £2m mansion in Wilmslow, Cheshire.
The whistleblowing inmate, 27, a convicted sex offender from Manchester who declined to be named, said it wasn’t clear whether Hall wanted the ring back because there had been a reconciliation or simply because it was valuable.
He described I wing as 'cushty' and repeated claims that Hall had received preferential treatment at the jail, which houses 1,200 inmates on four wings, many of them sex offenders.
“He obviously gets preferential treatment. That’s why he was on that wing so quick. There’s usually a waiting list for I wing. He was fast-tracked straight onto it,” he said.
Hall, he added, remained ‘blase’ about his crimes, telling fellow inmates he was innocent and that he was ‘put in here for patting someone on the bum - it’s ridiculous’.
He continued: “He’s not very well liked in there because of his crime and the publicity around it. He sometimes comes across as quite arrogant, like he’s better than everyone else. He knows no-one can touch him in there because he's well-protected by the screws.”
He said he was ‘common knowledge’ Hall was writing his autobiography while inside.
The Prison Service has previously denied claims from another former inmate that Hall was receiving preferential treatment as he was a celebrity.
