The First lady,Dame Patience Jonathan, on Monday in Abuja said partnership between the movies industry in Nigeria and India would boost both countries’ economies.
Jonathan said this at the opening ceremony of the first Indian film festival in Nigeria and the
commemoration of Bollywood, the Indian film industry at 100.
According to her, the turnover of the industry in terms of wealth creation and revenue generation is huge as both countries have population advantage.
”I must say that just like Nigeria with a population of more than 160 million people, India is blessed with a huge population of more than 1.2 billion ?people.
”We can therefore imagine what this translates to in economic terms,” the president’s wife said.
She urged the two industries to form partnership, to bring the desired dividends to? the people.
”We look forward ?to the possibility of stakeholders in the film industries from Bollywood and Nollywood engaging in partnerships or exchange programmes that will yield mutual benefits and promote better understanding between our two countries.”
Earlier, the Indian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr Ar Ghanashyam, expressed the wish that Nollywood would hold a similar festival in India.
”I’d like a Nigerian film festival to take place in India; I will discuss it with my counterpart and I recommend the showing of ‘Half of a Yellow Sun’ by Chimamanda Adichie, that is my dream.”
He commended the efficiency of the Nigerian people who aided the success of the festival within a short period in Nigeria.
”On March 6, I presented my credentials to President Jonathan, just three weeks ?after I did that we are holding this festival and within that time, lots of activities happened and we’re holding this festival.
”Now if someone says Nigeria is an inefficient country, send him to me,” Ghanashyam said.?
The seven-day festival is expected to show blockbuster films like Ghandi, among others with lots of Indian cuisines during the period.
